Today I am going to talk about learning English by watching movies in English. Now I know many students and teachers always say “We should watch English movies, we should always watch English movies” but nobody talks about tips and advice as how to effectively watch movies in English.
In this post I am going to tell you how to watch films in English and get maximum results. OK? Stay with me!
First of all please keep in mind that it is normal …
…if you don’t understand
Always keep in mind that when Hollywood make any kind of movie for the US and world audience they do not focus on young people like you who are just learning English. In other words, they do not ask their actors and actresses to speak super clear English without using any regional slang, professional and cultural phrases and expressions as well as idioms. Most of the American movies are full of expressions, phrases and sayings that are only known in specific states and cities. So do not worry if you do not understand. Take your time. Keep watching and keep learning as many new expressions, phrases, slangs and words as possible.
Bottom line: do not give up. Keep watching. Keep learning.
…if it seems they speak fast
Well, of course, they seem to speak fast my friend. Do you know how fast you speak in your own native language? And you do not notice how fast sometimes you can speak yourself. So it is normal. Do not get trapped. Because from your childhood you have probably never listened to English speech your brain is not structured to receiving information in a completely foreign language. So keep going and never, ever stop watching films in English. When I was a student I watched English movies during one year without understanding many things they say.
Bottom line: expect they will speak fast, but you can always train yourself.
…if it seems your English is rubbish
I know when you listen to native speakers speaking in English either in real life or in movies you sometimes think your English is rubbish and it is next to nothing. But guess what? It is normal. It is normal and it is normal. What you wanted? You wanted to learn today and start speaking perfect English tomorrow? Everything will come step by step. Do not forget that most of those actors and actresses in Hollywood movies are Americans or people who have been living in the USA for many years. Of course, they speak perfect English. But you do not get discouraged by it. It is just a matter of time. I have never lived in the USA or UK but I speak English not worse than any native speaker would.
Bottom line: see learning English as a step-by-step process. And smile.
OK? Now you understand that above things are normal to happen. Let’s get down to business.
How to watch movies in English as effectively as possible?
1. Watch educationally tailored films at the beginning
It is such kinds of movies that are specially created by a group English teachers or specialists in Cambridge and/or Oxford Universities. For example, if you happen to use Headway course books then you most probably know they have 15-20 minutes short and sweet videos. Watch them … all of them … one by one because they are designed for English language learners like you and they come in different levels (e.g. Elementary, Pre-Intermediate). They are excellent sources of videos because you will understand most of the words they say and since you understand you become even more interested in learning English.
Bottom line: start with easier videos.
2. Watch the movies you already watched in your own language
Because you already know what happens in the story and what the heroes talk about it will be much easier for you to watch and understand as many words as possible. Or first watch the video in your own language and then watch in English. You will see the results very quickly. What I love about this method is that you will learn to think and speak in real English because most of the time many students translate their ideas from their mother language into English. It is wrong. OK use this method and you will see that when the actors say ONE in your language they say the word ONE in a completely different way in English.
Bottom line: first watch English movies in your own mother language.
3. Avoid watching highly technological and scientific movies
Because how come you will understand highly technological phrases and slang used in such movies? How? I would not recommend you because you know sometimes it happens that even when you watch such movies in your own language, you may still not understand them because they contain too much terminology and so on. So play it safe at the beginning and avoid such films.
Bottom line: watching such films may kill your enthusiasm and high spirit
4. Watch films with generally clear scenario and predictable ending
So instead watch films which have a generally clear scenario of events and predictable ending. Such movies include “Mrs. Doubtfire”, “Speed”, “Home alone”, “Richie Rich” and so on. You may say they are old. Yes, they are old. So what? But hey … what is your goal? Watching latest Hollywood films or learning English by watching movies? Besides even today, you can find such films. Just take your time and search. It is just matter of time and searching.
Bottom line: watch simple films. They will not create a big headache.
