You have probably heard a lot that music can help you improve your English. Well, at least I hear and read it many times.
A lot of people talk about it and know that listening to music is a great and exciting way to learn English. You may also be wondering how to learn English using music?
Knowing that it is beneficial is one thing. What about a more concrete method of using music to improve the language skills? What if I could tell you more about it today?
In this post, I will be talking about how exactly you can manipulate songs and get as many benefits as possible from them.
Are you ready? :)
1. Listen to songs with beautiful message
I know a lot of people who listen to some kind of stupid, pop culture based songs that have no meaning, value or message. You might be wondering why it is important. It is very important. Remember that in every human being there is an evil side and there is an angel side.
Which one do you want to breed in yourself? I want to breed angel in me so that I feel good and happy. A mind is like a parachute. It works best when it is open. And your mind is open only when you are happy not when you are ill-minded and angry.
So that’s why I would say that starting with a beautiful song is not only good not but also it is very beneficial for you in the long term.
2. Prepare a copybook & write down new vocabulary
Now prepare all your tools because while listening if you don’t learn anything new, then what is the point? For every single song you listen, you should be able to pick up between 3-4 new words, phrases, idioms, sayings or grammar stuff.
In order to do it, just get out your copy-book or smart phone (with a note-taking App of course) and that’s it. Write down everything that seems to be new, interesting and useful. Listen to a one song a day and learn something new. In one week, you will come up with a lot already learned.
3. Stop the song several times while listening
Now when you are listening to a song, remember that at the beginning you will have to stop it several times. You may not like it at first because you want to enjoy listening to the song. However, remember that you are doing a strategic listening. You want to learn something new so that you can improve your English.
That’s why don’t get impatient and lose interest. Stop the song several times and write down as many new things you find as possible. Now probably you are saying “What about the lyrics? I will be holding them, no?” Well, yes you may have the lyrics (text of the song) but the way the singer pronounces certain words, phrases and etc can be way too different. That’s why you have to keep your eyes on and work systematically.
See how they pronounce certain words and believe me you will be really amazed at how singers pronounce extremely simple English words in a wildly different way.
4. Keep your level of English in mind
Be realistic. Know the level of your English before you select a song and start listening to it in order to improve your English. If I started English 2 or 3 months ago, I would not pick up a song by Eminem. Why… because first of all, he reads his texts very fast. Second of all, he pronounces a lot of English words in a non-English way that even English native speakers may find his songs difficult to understand and digest.
Why don’t you start with Beatles, Modern Talking or Madonna? Yeah, I understand they may be a little out of fashion and not in the trends these days but hey… who cares? What do you want? You want to improve your English, right? So why don’t you start with old classics and then catch up with trends in the world of music as well?
5. Sing a song in special events
Finally, once you have done all above, it is time to be proactive and take action. If you are shy and introvert by nature, I guess you may find it really hard to sing in public. But listen… you don’t have to sing to a huge crowd of people at the beginning.
Start with small events like friend’s birthdays. The greatest benefit of singing in public is that you will put everything that you have learned into practice. You will get out of your fear zone and show off your English. And I guess, once you do this, you will also learn how to speak English even in public in the future. During the process, you will tremendously improve your English language skills.
